Maria Sans Sangre

Think of the "Maria Sans Sangre" as a refreshing and bold take on the classic Bloody Mary, favoring fresh ingredients over the convenience of canned juices. This drink combines the bright flavors of cherry tomatoes and fresh basil, enhanced by a balanced mix of blanco tequila, dry sherry, lemon juice, and a hint of salt and pepper. Perfect for warm summer days, this creation is light and invigorating, ideal for awakening your taste buds during brunches or pre-dinner drinks.

Ingredients

  • 6 cherry tomatoes
  • 6 basil leaves
  • 15 ml of simple syrup
  • 60 ml of blanco tequila (I recommend El Tesoro)
  • 15 ml of dry sherry (I recommend Williams & Humbert medium-dry)
  • 15 ml of lemon juice
  • A pinch of salt and pepper
  • Garnish: 1 cherry tomato, 1 basil leaf

Preparation steps

  1. In the bottom of a shaker, muddle the tomatoes and basil with the simple syrup.
  2. Add the tequila, sherry, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  3. Shake with ice until chilled.
  4. Double-strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a coupe glass.
  5. For the garnish, pierce a small hole in the top of the tomato and insert the stem of the basil leaf like a flag. Make a slit in the bottom of the tomato and perch it on the rim of the glass.
